Minister Madikizela's Comments at the Opening of a Plumblink Store in Tokai

20 October 2011

Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela visited the opening of a new Plumblink store in Tokai, Cape Town, on 21 October 2011, and performed the official ribbon cutting.

The department supports partnership with business to enable housing and service delivery in the Western Cape. Plumblink is an important supplier of fittings and plumbing material to some government-funded housing projects in the Western Cape.

"I am very happy to be at the opening of this new store. I am also happy that Plumblink is growing, as it means more jobs for people of the Western Cape. It is important that the government uses suppliers who have their products manufactured in South Africa if possible, because we really need to support South African business. With the pressure on the global economy, it is important that we support local business as much as possible."

"Of course there is an expectation for South African companies to be competitive and cost-effective, and so they must compete with international prices. As a department, we are committed to creating integrated and sustainable human settlements and to using resources efficiently. This means encouraging businesses that provide jobs for local people in all components of the supply chain, from manufacturing to distribution, sales to installation."

"Without reliable partnerships with local suppliers, the department will be unable to deliver on its mandate to provide houses for people who really need them."
