Social Housing Projects is the Future of Housing - Minister Madikizela
Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela marked the launch of the Glenhaven Social Housing Project in Bellville with a sod-turning ceremony today, 3 October 2018.
The project is located in close proximity to public transport, the University of Western Cape (UWC), the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), schools and various economic opportunities, making it an Integrated Residential Development. Once complete, the project will offer its residents full fibre and DSTV connection, 24-hour access controlled security, biometrics entrance for pedestrians, central-water heating system and physically disabled-friendly units on the ground floor.
“This partnership has done great work” commented Minister Madikizela in reference to the partnership formed by Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, National and Local Government authorities, the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA), the Athlone School for the Blind Association and Urban Status, the developer of the project.
“The dire need for quality accommodation that is affordable was our main objective, ultimately to contribute to an improved quality of life for our future residents” commented Mr JP Nortier from Urban Status.
Minister Madikizela explained that the population growth in the Western Cape is between 110 000 and 120 000 per year. By 2030 the province will have a population of 8million. This presents government with various challenges, including the availability of suitable land for human settlement development.
“Social Housing projects is the future of housing. To sustain this type of project, people must contribute something in the form of rentals. This will allow government to replicate similar projects in the future” said Minister Madikizela.
The project will provide affordable and quality rental homes to the people of Bellville and surrounding areas. This project will serve the affordable market for people with a household income of R1 500 to R15 000 per month.
Construction of the Glenhaven Social Housing project is expected to begin during October 2018 and will yield 416 units when complete. The total budget for this project is an estimated R155 million and the project is estimated to be complete in December 2019.
