Minister Madikizela to Hand over Houses for Women's Day

7 August 2012

The Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will hand over two sponsored houses to needy beneficiaries as part of Women's Day celebrations on 9 August 2012.

The first house, in Illitha Park, Khayelitsha, will be handed over to Mrs Busiswa Mbuqwa, who has an 11-month-old baby, Thina. Thina is in need of a liver transplant, and must be housed in a warm, hygienic and secure house before the doctors will perform a transplant. Currently, Thina's mother lives in an informal settlement with her mother, grandparents and eight other family members. The story of Thina was highlighted by SABC's "Touching Lives".

The house has been sponsored by ASLA and the land was provided by the department. Other partners include ESKOM, the Department of Correctional Services and the National Home Builders' Registration Council.

The second house will be handed over to Miss C Gwavu of Mbekweni, in Paarl. Miss Gwavu's house was destroyed by fire some time ago and through the SABC's "Touching Lives" programme, M5 Construction came on board as the sponsor for the rebuilding of the house. M5 committed to provide material for a 42 square metre house. Inmates from Paarl prison did the construction.
