Media Alert and Photo Op: Gap Market Beneficiaries to Receive Houses

11 June 2013

The Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, along with the City of Cape Town Mayco  Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Thandeka Gcada, and the Chairman of Power Construction, Mr. Graham Power, will hand over some of the first gap market and open market units of Phase 1 of the Pelican Park Integrated Housing Project on 12 June 2013.

The gap houses, which are single storey and two-bedroomed, are sold from R290 000 to qualified buyers earning between R3 501 and R15 000 a month. The term gap housing refers to housing for those individuals who earn too much to qualify for a complete state house, yet often too little to buy a house on the open market. Beneficiaries are supported with a state housing subsidy which covers part of the housing cost. The open market homes begin at R480 000, and are for people earning more than R15 000 per month. Phase 1 will deliver 696 gap market houses, and 300 open market houses.

Pelican Park is an environmentally-friendly development that will include schools, a clinic, library, fuel station and a shopping centre. In total, 2 100 subsidy homes, for people earning less than R3 500 pm,  and 1 100 bonded houses will be built, making up the City of Cape Town’s largest integrated housing project.
