Netball Revolution Underway in SWD

11 April 2013

“This was only the beginning. Netball will grow to greater heights this year,” Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer excitedly told Ms Lizelle Erasmus, president of South Western Districts (SWD) Netball, at the region’s federation cheque handover ceremony in Mossel Bay on Wednesday, 10 April 2013

In his 2013 Budget Speech last month, Dr Meyer announced a “netball revolution” in the Western Cape. He believes that through greater support, federations will be able to change the lives of many young women in urban areas as well as in the rural parts of the province. An amount of R30 000 was handed over to netball development in the SWD region this year.

Erasmus was excited about the vision of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, together with its partners, of focusing on women this year. “This is really great news for netball players and representatives in the region, and we look forward to making steady progress this year,” she said.

When asked what SWD Netball’s vision is for this year, Erasmus said they would focus on taking the sport to the people. “It is always a challenge for players and spectators to travel to netball events. This year, we will focus on hosting events in communities and schools. We are confident that this will not only bring people together, but also promote development in order to create a bright future for emerging netball players in the region.”
