Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre to Host 6th Jazz in the Park Concert

The Western Cape Government Health’s Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre (WCRC) for persons with physical disabilities, in partnership with musician Amanda Tiffin, will host a Jazz in the Park concert on Sunday, 14 April 2013 at the Maynardville Open Air Theatre. 

The concert commences at 14:30 and acts include Amanda Tiffin and her Little Big band, Melanie Scholtz, Gavin Minter, 4midable and the University of Cape Town Jazz Voices. This event provides the opportunity for persons with disabilities and able bodied persons to socialise and to break down societal barriers and misconceptions about persons with physical disabilities.

Five successful jazz concerts in partnership with Amanda Tiffin were held from 2008 to 2012, during which a total of approximately R96 900.00 was raised. These funds have assisted the WCRC Facility Board to implement and continue with their Health and Wellness Centre projects, inclusive of the gymnasium and the swimming pool projects. Both projects focus on clients with disabilities and acts as a valuable resource for persons and Non Profit Organisations in the community. The aim of the next concert is to raise funds for the continuation and further development of the Health and Wellness Centre.

Tickets are limited and are on sale at Computicket (http://www.computicket.co.za) for R85.00 with discounts for pensioners (R65.00), students (R65.00) and children under 12 years (R65.00). Entry is free for children under the age of 12 years.

Since its opening, the WCRC has been involved in various research studies to identify the post-rehabilitation needs of persons with disabilities. One of the key findings from these studies indicated the need for health promotion and preventative services to cater for the health and wellness needs of persons with disabilities post-discharged from specialised rehabilitation centres.

The Health and Wellness Centre currently promotes and makes accessible activities such as hydro swimming pool, gymnasium, health talks, peer counselling and alternative therapies. The further development of the Health and Wellness Centre will also ensure the optimal utilisation of current resources at the WCRC.
