Clearing of Alien Vegetation Causes Chapman’s Peak Drive Closure
Chapman’s Peak Drive will be closed every Wednesday, starting 27 March 2013, for eight consecutive weeks. The closure will be between 9:00, after the morning rush hour and 16:00 before the start of the afternoon rush hour.
The road will not be closed on the public holiday of 1 May 2013.
In the event that abseilers cannot work due to bad weather conditions, Chapman’s Peak Drive will remain open. The call to work often happens on the day. The programme stands for now as planned with closure every Wednesday.
Non-critical areas along the pass will be managed by stop and go intermittent closure.
The removal of alien vegetation that grows on the mountain is the reason for the closure. The clearing of alien vegetation is a statutory requirement. It reduces the risk of fire and soil erosion.
The Department of Transport and Public Works apologises for any inconvenience.
