Supporting Women’s Sporting Excellence Through Women’s Leadership

18 March 2013

Women and girls took charge of their sports affairs by appointment of the Western Cape Women and Girls’ Committee of the Western Cape Sport Confederation on Saturday, 16 March 2013. The meeting was organised by the Confederation and the Sport Promotion Unit of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

All relevant policy documents identify sport federations as the custodians of sport and recreation in South Africa. One of the key transformation points on the national agenda has been the advancement and empowerment of women and girls in sport.

The Western Cape Women and Girls’ Committee has made it clear that advancing the transformation agenda requires ensuring that women’s sport is also administered by women.

This will support sustainable growth in women and girls’ sport in the province. Women in sport can be a powerful way of combating social ills within our communities and providing support for women to excel, despite the many challenges they face in the sporting arena.
