Gear Up for Fantastic Afcon Final on Sunday

8 February 2013

The much-anticipated final of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) will be decided between an underdog and a former powerhouse trying to find its way back to the top. The match will take place in the National Stadium, Johannesburg on Sunday, 10 February 2013.

Burkina Faso, ranked only 92nd in the latest International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) world rankings will face Nigeria, a team that would like to regain the pride of its predecessors, for the title. Burkina Faso shocked Ghana in the semi-finals by winning 3-1 from the penalty spot after the teams still drew after extra time. Nigeria raced into a 3-0 half-time lead before celebrating a devastating 4-1 victory over Mali after the final whistle.

Unfortunately South Africa (Bafana Bafana) won’t feature in this decisive soccer match, having lost their quarter-final match 3-1 on penalties to Mali after the two teams ended deadlocked 1-1 after extra time.

Despite Bafana Bafana’s absence, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport still encourages everyone to continue supporting the tournament to show that we’re proud that this showpiece was staged in our beautiful country.

Dress up in your soccer ‘gear’ and, together with your family members, make a noise on Sunday and prepare to take your place as the 12th player for your favourite team.
