Launch of the SWD District Academy System

25 January 2013

The South Western Districts (SWD) Academy System is set to lead the way for future district academies in the Western Cape and rest of South Africa. The Academy will officially be launched in Oudtshoorn on Friday, 25 January 2013.

All the hard work put in by the stakeholders of the SWD District Academy – the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the SWD Sport Council, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Oudtshoorn Municipality and the SWD sport federations – is finally coming to fruition.

The SWD-based federations have already started training camps and talent identification programmes to bring deserving athletes into the Academy System. These athletes will be competing in the hope that they will be chosen to represent South Africa at international level and become part of the country’s elite group of athletes.

The De Jager Sport Complex in Oudtshoorn will serve as the headquarters of the Academy. Through extensive research and discussions, the stakeholders of the SWD District Academy System have identified eight priority codes for the initial phase of development. They are: aquatics, athletics, baseball, boxing, cycling, football, netball and table tennis. The Oudtshoorn Municipality and DCAS have identified facilities where the needs of other sporting codes can also be accommodated.
