Young Gymnasts doing it “Better Together” for the Western Cape

19 December 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is proud of the achievements of the Wavecrest Primary School u13 girls’ gymnastic team at the 2012 National Schools Sport Championship in Pretoria on Thursday, 13 December 2012.

The team from Rocklands in Mitchells Plain bagged a number of awards at the Johnny Baard Gymnastics Hall, including 1st place in the category Gym Stars and an impressive 2nd place in the category Aerobics Girls.

The Gymnast of the Tournament Award went to Nazley Losper of Wavecrest, who spoke about how happy she was. “I’m happy because we’ve done well as a team. Winning this individual award is unbelievable. My family and friends are going to be so proud of me when I show them the trophy and gold medal,” said an emotional Losper.

Team manager Mr John Stanley praised his young team for doing so well, and putting Mitchells Plain and the Western Cape on the gymnastics map. “Most of the team members come from disadvantaged backgrounds but that didn’t prevent them from winning. They’ve done us proud as a team, and some of their parents also came here to support them. This is a fantastic achievement for the province, as they are still young. I’m confident they can continue to develop and honour their community again in the future”, said Stanley.

Team Western Cape is extremely proud of the team. Spokesperson Ms Doreen Slingers said the girls are focused and that credit should also go to their coaches. “It is clear that their fantastic team spirit and desire to work as a united team contributed to their success. I sincerely hope they take this experience and plough it back into their communities.”
