Positive expectations after Day 1 at League Finals

Competing against the best in the country at the National School Sports Championship has created a high level of excitement amongst the 440 members of the Western Cape team. The championship runs from 10 to 15 December 2012 at various venues in Pretoria.

This week members of Team Western Cape are scheduled to take part in competitive basketball, chess, cricket, football, gymnastics, netball, rugby and volleyball.

Most school teams fared well on the first day of action. The captain of the u13 boys’ volleyball team, Aiden Fouten of Westcott Primary School, was excited to have been exposed to a new environment. “I really don’t know what to expect of the other teams but our goal is just to make new memories and win as a team”, he said.

Meanwhile, the 2012 Metropole Schools Sportswoman of the Year, Tiffany Agulhas, representing Settlers High School in the u18 girls’ chess category, intends to help her team dominate the game. “Everybody wants to win, but it’s not always about winning. To enjoy what you do, to make new friends and to be a role model to others is more inspiring” she said.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is committed to give learners opportunities to play in many sporting codes. Mr Roderick Siljeur of Sport Development said that, despite some challenges on the first day, management, coaches and participants are working together to ensure that all are proud to represent the Western Cape.
