Celebrating Excellence in SWD Sport
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport partnered with the South Western Districts (SWD) Sport Council and Oudtshoorn Municipality to crown sport stars from the region at the SWD Sport Awards. This prestigious event took place at the Civic Centre in Oudtshoorn on Friday, 16 November 2012.
Proud nominees received awards for their outstanding competition sports achievements in the period from 16 October 2011 to 30 September 2012 in a variety of categories. Evaluation criteria included the candidate’s participation, performance and achievements at international, continental, national and provincial level. Selection panels also took into account the nominee’s ranking, the types of competitions he or she has participated in, and whether the nominee is classed as an amateur or a professional.
The Sportsman/ Sportswoman of the Year awards went to Christo Jordaan (SWD Powerlifting) and Mathrin Simmers (SWD Rugby). Mr Henry Paulse of the Directorate: Sport Promotion thanked the nominees for their dedication and achievements by saying SWD have a proud sporting history when it comes to producing athletes.
He said while playing the game in good spirit is more important than winning or losing, it was important to honour outstanding achievement. Mr Paulse encouraged the young nominees to use sport and education together to ensure a bright future for themselves.
