Museum Policy in for more Development

20 November 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport seeks to strengthen partnerships with all museums, communities and other stakeholders in the Western Cape. A draft Museum Bill is currently being compiled in collaboration with stakeholders.

Once approved by the Legislature, this new law will provide an improved governance framework for museums in the Western Cape which will ensure the preservation of our rich, collective cultural heritage.

The Bill builds on the Draft Museum Policy that went through a year of initial public consultation and was then open for further comment. The discussion document “Towards a new Museum Policy for the Western Cape” was first circulated for comment in March 2011 to all museums, municipalities, libraries, and other relevant stakeholders in the Western Cape.

After reviewing the comments on the discussion document, the Draft Museum Policy was compiled and circulated for comment in March 2012.The department envisages that this new legislation will serve a pivotal role in ensuring the preservation of our province’s rich and diverse heritage for many years to come.
