Beaufort West Forensic Pathology Laboratory Opens Its Doors (Simul)

18 October 2012

The Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, officially opened a new R10 million forensic laboratory in Beaufort West on 15 October 2012.

The Beaufort West Forensic Pathology facility is situated on the premises of Beaufort West Hospital and has been in construction for over a year at a cost of R10 million.

This new building will house state-of-the-art equipment and has increased storage capacity with improved viewing facilities. This facility also caters for autopsies to be conducted on site, a service that was not offered in the facility before. Beaufort West Forensic Laboratory will provide services to the greater Beaufort West area and surrounds, including Leeu-Gamka, Nelspoort and Murraysburg communities. It will also be used as a referral facility on the N1 from Murraysburg up to the Laingsburg drainage area for all major road traffic accidents if mass fatalities occur.

“The location of the Forensic Pathology Laboratory was strategically selected to be accessible for the people of Beaufort West and surrounding areas. Its proximity to Beaufort West Hospital will also enhance and strengthen the quality of health services to the people of this area. This is also in line with provincial department’s goal and objectives of attaining world-class facilities and infrastructure,” Minister Botha said.

The long-awaited facility will help bring an improved service to the community of Beaufort West and surrounding area. The facility will be operational between 07:30 and 16:00 on weekdays, but the service will be available 24/7 through standby and on-call services. The contact details of the new facility remain unchanged.
