Safe and Environmentally Friendly Initiation Workshops in George

15 October 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and Cape Nature in George are working together to equip people from George and Mossel Bay with important information about making initiation rituals safer and more environmentally friendly. The department’s First Aid Initiation Project’s workshops held at King George Hotel from 10 to 12 October 2012 were attended by 15 participants, among them traditional surgeons, carers, potential initiates and their parents.

EMCARE facilitated the project, and Cape Nature in George provided transport for participants from Mossel Bay. According to Mr Thandwa Ntshona of the Directorate: Arts and Culture, participants could apply what they had learned about first aid and the environment to initiation, as well as to other aspects of life.
