Western Cape Government Offers Reward for Cop Killers

15 October 2012

Media Statement by Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape

I was very sad to receive a report this morning that two police officers were shot in the head, at point blank range, while they were on late-night patrol in Imizamo Yethu. This follows the murder of Mpumelelo Xakekile, a Metro Police officer, who was also shot dead at point blank range, along the N2 while he was carrying out his duties. The 26-year-old woman constable tragically died after last night's attack. Her male colleague is brain dead, fighting for his life, and the hospital is waiting for the family to say whether they should switch off the life support machines. I extend my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of these officers.

According to information from the office of the Provincial Police Commissioner, General Arno Lamoer, the officers' firearms were not taken and the motive for the shooting has not yet been established. The police are doing everything they can to get to the bottom of this horrific incident with Hawks investigators following up leads. The police are appealing for information from the community that will help with their investigation.

To lend its support to the investigation, the Western Cape Government is offering a reward of up to R70 000 to any individuals that bring forward any information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for this attack. We must ensure as much as possible that the perpetrators are brought to book and justice is served for this heinous act.
