Minister Fritz Calls for Safe Return of Missing Teen

11 October 2012

Media Statement by Albert Fritz, Minister of Social Development

I was deeply moved by the disappearance of a school girl from Mitchell’s Plain on Monday this week. What seems to be a case of truancy has now gone very wrong for Mariam Coetzee and her family. She has not been seen since leaving home on Monday morning.

I have mobilised social workers from my department to engage with the family and the greater community, and to provide much needed support and assistance during this difficult time.

I have been informed that there have been alleged attempts to involve Mariam in adult movies prior to her disappearance. Too many of our young girls are lured into this industry with the promise of quick riches. The consequences are always catastrophic.

I am urging the police to investigate this possible link to her disappearance and to keep the family updated with their progress.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mariam's family and I hope that their daughter will return home safely. Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of Mariam can go to the local Social Development office in Mitchell’s Plain or contact our toll-free line on 0800 220 250.
