Success of Workshops Evident at West Coast Arts Week Festival

9 October 2012

The talents of stage performers in a variety of genres from rural communities were showcased at the Weston High School in Vredenburg on Friday, 5 October 2012. This was the culmination of the West Coast Arts Festival, which aims to develop musical and artistic talent in the region, co-hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and Saldanha Bay Municipality.

In the week leading up to the presentation, the department and its facilitators held workshops with youths in various communities to prepare them to perform at the festival.

Nyanga Makeleni (13) from Laingville in St Helena Bay and his group performed gumboot dances to entertain the crowd. “It was really a fun-filled experience for us as a group and I’m grateful for the department for the exposure and their assistance with the three-day dance development workshops,” he said.

Jesmine Louw (16) from Louwville in Vredenburg attended music development project workshops and performed at the event. “I’ve learnt so much about orchestra instruments and how to play them. I’m really happy and thankful to the facilitators for their advice,” she said.

It was evident that the workshops by the department and its partners brought youths together and provided them with opportunities to perform in their local communities. Mr Benjamin Bock of the Directorate: Arts and Culture thanked the workshop facilitators for their contribution to the success of the festival.
