Mural Paintings Brighten up Care Village in Vredenburg

9 October 2012

The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, praised the Visual Arts Week project for transforming Siyabonga Care Village, Vredenburg, into such a bright beacon of hope. At a ceremony on Friday, 5 October 2012, he exclaimed how impressed he is with the Care Village’s new appearance. The project, mural paintings on Siyabonga’s walls, served as a build up to the West Coast Arts Week Festival. The festival is based on a partnership between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Saldanha Municipality and other entities.

Dr Meyer was overwhelmed by the participation and excitement of children, juveniles, ex-drug addicts and emerging artists. He lauded the artists and their assistants for their fantastic work. He thanked the organisers for facilitating the opportunities for these artists to develop. “This is the perfect platform for these artists to develop their skills. It also demonstrates the potential of mural painting as an art form on the West Coast,” he said.

The artists also shared with the audience how the workshops shaped their experience. The Siyabonga beneficiaries and employees are very excited about the new look. Ms Chrizelda Saul said that the colourful look brightens the place and it attracts the passing traffic’s attention. “Since the new look Siyabonga receives more visitors, especially those that never before visited Siyabonga. We received many positive responses from the public,” she said.

The department is confident that the mural paintings and their bright colours will bring some excitement to Siyabonga Care Village by giving the residents a sense of belonging.
