Drama Opportunities at Suidoosterfees

8 October 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport provided potentially life-changing opportunities for aspiring theatre performers at the West Coast Drama Festival on Thursday, 4 October 2012.

Various drama groups from the communities of Saldanha Bay, Vredenburg and Clanwilliam took their unique productions to the stage for the coveted crown at Diazville High School in Saldanha Bay. All of the groups form part of the department’s drama development structures within these communities.

Mr Moeniel Jacobs of the Directorate: Arts and Culture said that the festival aims to grow theatre and present artists with opportunities to perform on professional stages. Judges Anele Sithulweni, Lendy Swaartbooi and Karl Groger were pleased with the overall standard of the performances. They gave advice to the groups to help them position themselves for performing on bigger stages in future.

The winner, Janekse Rademan from Saldanha Bay, was grateful for the opportunity to perform at this year’s festival. It was an overwhelming moment when the judges announced she had won. “I’ve worked extremely hard and to win this crown as the best in the West Coast, it’s just unbelievable. I dedicate this milestone to my family who been supporting me throughout my career,” she said. Her performance has ensured that she will have an opportunity to perform at Die Burger Suidoosterfees next year.

Through the festival, the department is promoting and developing local drama groupson the West Coast and providing them with opportunities to perform on professional stages.
