Celebrate Cultural Warmth at West Coast Arts Week

8 October 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport partnered with the Saldanha Bay Municipality to showcase the arts and culture talent of West Coast and to launch the National Anthem CD at Weston High School in Vredenburg on Friday, 5 October 2012.

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, said that it was an honour to launch the CD. “We as South Africans respect our anthem and it is here to stay. It’s written in five official languages of South Africa and, through our diversity, we can all sing the anthem with pride. In true South African spirit, let’s all celebrate cultural warmth and continue to build on our music and art heritage,” he said.

The Provincial Arts Week has been hosted in every region of the Western Cape. This fifth celebration of the event returned to Saldanha Bay, bringing with it workshops on dance, visual arts, drama, literacy, art development and music to promote and develop local talent in various communities.

Arts and Culture Director, Ms Jane Moleleki, said that the Arts Week aimed to work intensively with communities. “The department wants to develop arts and culture in communities, and to make sure that something valuable is left behind. The talent of the performers should be exposed at major showcase events and further developed,” she said.

The department successfully provided the West Coast artists with skills development training and networking opportunities while promoting the talents of the area through presenting these to the local community during Arts Week.
