The Department of Agriculture Celebrates World Food Day

4 October 2012

It is that time of year when we celebrate World Food Day, which will be held on Wednesday, 10 October 2012. The theme for 2012 is "Agricultural co-operatives - key to feeding the world".

This year, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Witzenberg Municipality, is celebrating World Food Day in Ceres. The event will be hosted in the extremely impoverished community of Bella Vista, also benefiting the nearby Nduli and Prince Alfred Hamlet on the outskirts of Ceres.

The Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gerrit van Rensburg, the Witzenberg Mayor, Stefan Louw, and other dignitaries will be visiting the projects prepared for World Food Day, including household and communal gardens in Bella Vista, Nduli and Prince Alfred Hamlet.

During a ceremony, a food mountain, sponsored by various organisations, will also be handed over by the minister to three major beneficiaries - the Sisonke Service Centre in Nduli, Selfsorg Centre in PA Hamlet and the crèche, Moses se Mandjie, in Bella Vista.
