The South Western District team was crowned the winner in the A-section of the Inter-Regional Development Netball Tournament in Saldanha Bay on Saturday, 25 August 2012.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport partnered with the West Coast Netball Union to bring together hundreds of netball players and their supporters at Western Cape Inter-Regional Development Netball Tournament in Saldanha Bay from 24-25 August 2012.

Western Province, Boland, Central Boland and South Western Districts, as well as two local West Coast teams, took part in the contest held at the West Coast High School. This high-standard event lived up to expectations with South Western Districts winning the A-section and Boland winning the B-section. The tournament was a perfect platform for players to develop their skills.

There could be no doubt that netball is a valuable way of bringing people together. According to Mr Cornelius Malgas, acting regional manager at the Department West Coast office: "Netball has the potential to grow here judging by what I've seen here today. The Department will definitely develop the sport further in our communities".

West Coast Netball Union president Ms Madelein Horn was thrilled have hosted a successful tournament. She said this proved that the West Coast can host major sport tournaments, and expressed the hope that the region would host many more.

The meaningful partnership between the department and the various federations ensured that 180 netball players left the tournament having had a joyful experience; a good stepping stone into the future.
