Statement by Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore - Strike Action: No Decision to Close Schools has been Taken

12 September 2004
"Certain media reports have created the impression that the department will be closing schools on Thursday in the light of the possible strike action. This is not correct.

"We have a responsibility to ensure that learning continues and that minimum disruption occurs.

"I am calling on governing bodies to assist by having a presence at schools on Thursday. Our department will be monitoring each and every school through our circuit managers and EMDC directors.

"Any decision on closure of an individual school will only be made on Thursday should the strike proceed and should effective learning be impossible.

"We remain, however, hopeful that a settlement will be reached."
