Successful Conclusion Of Examinations

18 November 2004
Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore has expressed his delight at the successful conclusion of the matric examinations today.

Said MEC Dugmore: "This brings to a close the twelve-year long chapter of more than 40,000 learners. It certainly must be an emotional experience having to let go of an institution and its people, which shaped your views and values over so many years.

"Now the hard work of marking the papers will begin. The learners will then have to wait till 29 December to hear whether they have made the grade.

"I want to commend the learners for having conducted themselves in a disciplined manner. The fact that no reports of leaking of papers was received, says much about the integrity of the examinations process.

"I want to call on all our learners not to see this examinations as the final one in their lives, but to commit themselves to further learning, either at university or a further education and training college.

"In order for us to build the Western Cape as a Home for All, we need the expertise and skills of all our learners, especially those with mathematics, science and technology.

"This weekend, no doubt, our learners will have reason to celebrate. But please be careful and do not act irresponsibly. Your whole future lies ahead, and if you are not careful, it can be destroyed in a matter of hours.

"Previous celebrations all too often got out of hand. I therefor call on our police to be extra vigilant in maintaining the peace.

"I have also learned of a learner who was attacked this morning. I am concerned about the safety of our learners, and want to caution them to avoid isolated and dangerous places on their way to school and home."

*** Tomorrow, the Western Cape Education Department will be opening its district centres and certain satellite schools for parents whose children have not yet been placed in a school for 2005.
Parents can also phone a toll-free hotline: 0800 2005 06.

This is part of the MEC's attempts to make sure that all our learners are placed in school.
