MEC Chris Stali to Announce Soccer Sponsorship

29 November 2004
The inaugural Inter-District Soccer Challenge, fully sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, will be announced by MEC Stali at a function. At this function the draw of the participating soccer districts will take place.

The R100 000 sponsorship is the brain child of township districts who approached Minister Stali with a proposal. The proposal identified that there is a drought of competition and a decline in the number of supporters and general soccer standards within the townships.

Minister Stali agreed to pilot the tournament and will work to attract future sponsorships so that the tournament can be inclusive of all the districts. Ten districts will be competing for R20 000 prize money and a floating trophy for first place. Runners up will each receive R10 000, and each participating district will receive R5 000. There will also be rewards for 'Player of the Match', 'Goal Keeper of the Tournament', 'Best Referee of the Tournament' and other top achievers.

To help boost the dwindling supporters in local PSL games (i.e. Ajax and Santos), the MEC has arranged for the semi-finals and finals to be played as curtainraisers at the local PSL league fixtures early next year. The teams participating are: Gugulethu Football Association (FA) Langa FA,Nyanga FA, Crossroads FA, Phillipi FA, Mzamo FA, Khanyiso FA, Mfuleni FA, Lingethu FA, Vukani FA. The districts have selected their teams from clubs within their jurisdiction.

The function which will be attended all partcipating districts will take place as follows:

Venue: Monwabisi Community Hall, Mendi Avenue, Langa Township
Date: 01 December 2004
Time: 18h30 Sharp
