Western Cape Agriculture Takes World Food Day to Murraysburg

8 October 2007

The aim of the World Food Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. As part of the World Food Day Commemoration, the Department will be launching 'Fowls for Africa' project in Murraysburg on the 12th October 2007. A total of 41 households will be receiving indigenous chickens (25 chickens per household) as a contribution towards Food Security.

The theme for the World Food Day 2007, is 'Right to Food', which is even more relevant to South Africa in view of the RSA Constitution, Section 27 1 (b) which asserts Right to Food as a fundamental human right.

The Department of Agriculture is currently implementing a total of 53 Food Security projects / initiatives across the province.

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture cordially invites you to join Minister Cobus Dowry for our World Food Day Celebrations.

As part of its World Food Day celebrations, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, through its Farmer Support and Development Programme will deliver 1000 indigenous fowls to a total of 40 vulnerable households in Murraysburg, in the Central Karoo District Municipality. The aim is to champion the "RIGHT TO FOOD" campaign, which is the international theme for the 2007 celebrations, which is indeed very relevant for communities such as Murraysburg where the unemployment rate is almost 90%.
