107 Title Deeds Handed Over to Farmworkers

The Minister of Agriculture in the Western Cape, Cobus Dowry will hand over 107 Title Deeds to farmworkers of the Oaks Village Association on the farm of the Molteno Brothers in Elgin on 23 November 2007.

 

The event will start at 11:30 in the Harry Molteno Hall, Oaks Village, Villiersdorp Road, Elgin.

This is an historic occasion as it earmarks the start of the program by the Department of Land Affairs, Agriculture and Producers to establish Agri-Villages for farmworkers in the Western Cape.

Over and above the 107 houses and an old age home of 8 residences suitable for couples, and one additional residential building that is not being transferred at this time, the other buildings and facilities that are being transferred to the Oaks Village Corporation are :

 

  • Primary school, government run with three extra teachers funded by the M B Trust , 145 children grades 1 - 7, all from the Oaks Village
  • Library [provincial library supported] and after school care center with resource facility and computer centre, run by librarian and two after school carers, approximately 180 children attend after school care
  • Youth center and youth cycle shed [in process of being upgraded] with BEN [Bicycling Empowerment Network] soon to deliver about 150 bicycles.
  • Two swimming pools [main and toddler]
  • Club house, cricket and rugby fields with netball court
  • Recreational hall that can accommodate 250 people with stage
  • Crèche for farm children, approx 80 children in season with 11 professional and support staff
  • Church for various denominations use
  • Graveyard that is used by the community.

 

The employee and pensioner residents have access to the Molteno Brothers clinic serviced by a fulltime sister and assistant with doctor visits three times a week, and the farms fulltime social worker.
