Department of Transport and Public Works Lays Criminal Charges againts George Taxi Operators

25 June 2009

Media Statement by Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works

George Taxi Thuggery will not be Tolerated

The Department of Transport and Public Works has laid charges of assault, theft and damage to property against individual taxi operators in George.

This follows the disruption of a steering committee meeting between the Department of Transport and Public Works, the George Taxi Owners' Front, the George Taxi Association, and Louis Transport to discuss the implementation of the George Mobility Strategy. A member of the Department was assaulted and harassed by the taxi operators.

The incident has infuriated Minister Robin Carlisle. "I am outraged by this blatant thuggish behaviour. I will exhaust every legal means to bring the individual perpetrators to book. The Taxi Association or Associations concerned must also be held accountable for the actions of their members. Let me be crystal clear - I will bring down the full force of the law on anyone or on any organisation that resorts to intimidation or violence."

The Department will assist the police in every way to ensure that justice is done.
