Exercising Together is a Welcome Change

22 August 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is appealing to people improve their fitness by participating in public aerobics sessions, currently held on Friday mornings during August at 08:30 in the Company Gardens in Cape Town.

This initiative is part of the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer's plan to bring people together in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. The minister showed his support by joining staff and community members in a mass exercise session on Friday, 17 August 2012.

Ms Olivia Carolisen, fitness trainer at the Provincial Gymnasium, described this initiative as a fun way of exercising in the fresh air and sunshine. She said that the department is hoping to make this an ongoing campaign.

The provincial government is committed to promoting healthy lifestyles in the Western Cape. Earlier this year, Premier Helen Zille launched the "Better Together" Cycle Tour to create awareness about "the fitness revolution" in the province.

Dr Meyer found it encouraging in Women's Month that so many women were showing their dedication to fitness and health: "I'm really impressed by these women's emphasis on exercise. This is a great example of the department's drive to improve productivity in the workplace, and in life, through promoting healthy lifestyles. Everyone can be a winner when we're living in a healthy way."
