Premier Zille Responds to ANCYL Letter on Receipt of Memorandum

22 August 2012

Media Statement by Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape

On Monday, 20 August, I received a letter from the ANC Youth League Dullah Omar region requesting that I receive a memorandum they would be delivering to my office on Monday, 27 August. I have responded to their letter stating that I will accept their request if they publicly retract their repeated threats to make the city and the province ungovernable and apologise to the people of the Western Cape for the subsequent violent protests.

The letters can be viewed below:

I always try to be available to meet with communities who have grievances about service delivery. However, I refuse to engage on the basis of threats, intimidation and violence including the destruction of the public property. This would be tantamount to endorsing the erosion of our Constitution and the rule of law.
