Elsenburg College Opening Ceremony

26 January 2012

Ladies and gentlemen,
Colleagues and students,

Welcome to the beginning of another academic year. For some of you it is the first year of a new adventure. For some of you it is the last year before you will embark on a career. But for all of us it is yet another opportunity to improve ourselves in order to be ready for the challenges that await us in the future. And dear students: Believe me when I say that there will be plentiful challenges awaiting you in the near future.

Friends: The skill of entertaining ideas without heedlessly accepting it is a skill we all need in South Africa. We need to be more open to each other and we need to make more effort to try and understand one another.

For those of you who are first-year students: Aristotle, the ancient philosopher, once said: "It is only an educated mind that can entertain an idea without heedlessly accepting it."

And friends, the world is already changing: The world population is growing fast. We are projecting a world population of 9 billion people by 2050. We will need more food. The climate is changing. In South Africa, we need to be ready for more extreme events such as droughts and floods. We will need new crops to satisfy new tastes, but also crops that are adapted to our changing weather patterns. We will need new ways of producing these crops.

The future of agriculture lies in ever-increasing productivity. We need higher yields and lower input costs. You will have to face these questions and come up with solutions during your careers.

Students: But also enjoy 2012 with the energy only the young have. Remember your good fortune to be in a position to study. Allow the lecturers to challenge you but also challenge yourselves. You are South Africa's best investment for the future. You should also take time to dream in between your busy study schedule. Because: If you dream it, you can do it.
