MEC Max Steps Up Traffic Law Enforcement for September Holidays

The MEC for Community Safety, Adv. Lennit Max, has stepped up traffic law enforcement in anticipation of higher traffic volumes on the provincial roads for the September school holidays starting Thursday, 24 September.

Max said that many families are bound to take the opportunity of a longer weekend and will travel by road to various destinations.

In an effort to increase road safety over this period I have instructed the Provincial Traffic Service to intensify law enforcement operations with specific focus on engaging road users by means of speed law enforcement, stop and checks, as well as roadblocks.

We want to increase active engagement of road users. Speed law enforcement which entails engagement of offenders and immediate issuing of notices, random stop and checks as well as roadblocks will considerably enhance the visibility of traffic officers.

This will allow officers to actively engage with the public on road safety issues and thus positively influence their road behavior.

Accordingly, Minister Max requested the respective traffic law enforcement agencies at Municipalities to also intensify their law enforcement efforts by collaborating with the Provincial Traffic services in their areas.

Max said that results from studies show that speed and alcohol are the two (2) factors most prevalent as far as road trauma is concerned.

Our joint efforts will result in making the Western Cape roads even safer for citizens and visitors to our Province.
