Western Cape Arts and Culture Organisations Receive R6 Million from MEC Jenner at Cheque Handover Ceremony

1 November 2009
Over R6 million will be awarded to deserving Arts and Culture organisations in the Western Cape. The funds will be distributed at a cheque handover ceremony, hosted by provincial minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Minister Sakkie Jenner. >

The handover will take place at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Okkie Jooste Cultural Centre in Stellenbosch on Monday, 2 November 2009 at 13:00.

This year's funding cycle commenced in May 2009, with a call for applications sent out in the media. Information sessions were held across the Province in all regions to assist and capacitate organisations interested in applying. The advertisement called for applications from bona-fide, non-profit arts and culture organisations involved in the visual, performing or literary arts, humanities and/or youth development.

DCAS thus allocated funds to established entities that have mentorship or development programmes, works by emerging creative arts companies or organisations and proposals for new works that explore the Western Cape's indigenous cultural heritage through genres of the performing and creative arts. It also supports proposals that seek to facilitate development programmes that provide on-the-job-training in technical skills, arts administration and mentorship in arts and culture training. Those that support community arts and culture projects were also funded.

Only organisations that complied with the prescripts of the Funding Policy 2009 were considered to benefit in this regard and the Minister surveyed and approved all the recommendations appropriately.

DCAS is proud to congratulate the organisations and trust that it will serve as a motivation to those who were not successful this year. The opening of the next funding cycle will be due in 2010.
