MEC Grant Seeks Urgent Interdict Against COSAS

Minister for Education in the Western Cape, Donald Grant, has strongly condemned the disruption of a second examination centre at Thembelihle High School in Khayelitsha on Friday.

"We simply cannot tolerate this kind of thuggish behaviour which prejudices the rights of learners writing the most important examinations of their lives," said Grant.

"After a discussion with the Premier, a decision has been taken to seek an urgent interdict against the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) to prevent them from entering or approaching any public ordinary school or designated exam centre."

"We are taking decisive action on this matter and will do all that is necessary to protect the rights of learners who are currently writing their matric exams."

Grant said that he had also been in contact with the National Minister for Education.

"Minister Motshekga has backed our decision to seek an interdict. She has also indicated that she has spoken to the Presidency who has given their support for tough action to be taken against anyone who disrupts any examination centre. We are grateful for their support."

MEC Grant is in constant contact with MEC Max and senior police officials to ensure that there is high police visibility, in all the affected areas, and that there is a quick response to any disturbance if, and when, they occur.

"I have had confirmation that the 17 learners writing the Physical Sciences Paper 1 at Thembelihle High, will be writing the examination today. We commend the education officials for responding so efficiently and speedily to the situation."
