MEC Max Condemn Assault on Traffic Officers

15 November 2009

The Minister of Community Safety, Adv. Lennit Max strongly condemned the assault on two Provincial Traffic officers by a drunken driver and his passengers near Macassar on Sunday afternoon.

The female officer, Ms. Zoliswa Cetywayo, was assaulted when a breathalyser test indicated that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and he had to be arrested. Her colleague, Mr. John Bezuidenhout, who came to her rescue was also assaulted by the driver and his passengers and had to receive stitches under his eye.

Max said that any assault on a law enforcement officer will not be condoned and that such conduct constitutes a direct attack on the rights of law enforcement officers to protect the rights to safety of citizens.

Transgressors will not get off lightly and will have to answer to the courts.

Max said that Traffic Officers will not be deterred by such unlawful conduct of drivers and will continue to stringently apply the laws of the road.

It is the duty of Traffic officers to ensure that all road users arrive safely home and to this calling they (officers) will act.
