Pedestrian Safety is the Responsibility of Pedestrians and Drivers

The Minister for Community Safety, Adv. Lennit Max, has warned motorists to be alert at all times to the safety of pedestrians when driving on our roads.

This comes after five (5) pedestrians were knocked down in three separate incidents near Worcester, Oudtshoorn and Khayelitsha over the past weekend.

Max says that many citizens, especially in the rural areas, have to walk long distances due to the lack of vehicle ownership or public transport. Thus they need to cross busy roads at times to reach their destinations.

He also cautions pedestrians to ensure that they are visible to oncoming traffic, by wearing reflective signs on their clothes.

Max also appeals to pedestrians not to take to the roads when they are under the influence of alcohol as this will impair their vision as well as good judgment when they try to cross the roads.

Whilst road safety is every road users responsibility, all drivers as well as pedestrians play an important role in keeping our roads safer.

Law enforcement agencies will continue in their efforts to bring down the high death rate on our roads and to ensure that all road users arrive safely home.
