The Queen's Baton Relay 2010 Delhi

The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Mr. Sakkie Jenner will on Sunday, 10 January 2010, be accepting The Queens Baton Relay 2010 Delhi at the Cape Town International Airport.

This forms part of The Queens Baton Relay 2010 Delhi run through the Commonwealth Nations and aims to symbolise the unity and shared ideals of the Commonwealth Nations and will enable communities, beyond the host City of Delhi, to share in the Games celebrations.

The Queens Baton Relay 2010 Delhi commenced at Buckingham Palace on 29 October 2009, and will end at the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi on the 3rd of October 2010.

During the Relay, the Baton will cut across 17 Nations of the Commonwealth before it spends a 100 days visiting 28 states and seven union territories in India, where the games will be held in October.

According to Minister Jenner 'It is an opportunity for us as the Western Cape to once again rally around a shared interest, namely sport, which aims to bridge the divides within our communities, as well as act as a catalyst to the problems which our people face'.

11:30: A convoy, which include A Cons Minister Sakkie Jenner, as well as the Mayor of Cape Town Alderman Dan Plato and the Queens' Baton Relay 2010 Delhi representatives will be led by a group cyclists from Khayelitsha who will be representing South Africa at the games, will take the Baton to Gugulethu.

11:40: Once at the Gugulethu Indoor Sports Complex, a gymnastics display will be done by 200 children from the surrounding communities.

12:10: The Convoy will then depart to the Heideveld Sports Complex led by Sports legends and Athletes from Gugulethu and Heideveld as well as members of the Santos Football Club. A Kaapse Klopse display will take place before the convoy departs for the Cape Of Good Hope Castle.

13:30: A finger lunch will be held at the Castle, where a short address will be made by Minister Sakkie Jenner from where the South African Sevens Rugby Team will lead the Convoy to the Clock Tower Precinct at the Waterfront where the Baton will be handed back to representatives of The Queens Baton Relay 2010 Delhi delegation.
