Rail Strike: Province's Intervention

6 May 2010

In unprecedented cooperation between government, business and transport, the key role players have put together a transport strategy to ensure everyone gets to their destination during the rail strike. This team is doing everything humanly possible to mitigate the impact of the strike upon the people of Western Province.

In return, we appeal to the public to do everything they can to help us help each other. This includes lift-sharing, planning of essential journeys, eliminating unessential trips and, if possible, to explore working from home or working flexi-time. Above all, we ask people to be patient on the road.

These are the interventions that the team has made:

The Provincial Government, the City of Cape Town and Chamber of Commerce will encourage their almost 300, 000 employees and members to work agreed flexible working hours during the strike to extend the peak hour time to relieve congestion.

Golden Arrow Buses will doubled their peak services and will extend their peak hour bus services from 05h00 - 09h00 and 15h00 - 19h00.

The public are encouraged to purchase clip cards. After speaking to leading taxi operators, they have kindly agreed to extend their trips during peak hours for the duration of the strike. Security will be beefed at bus stations and taxi ranks in the City.

A Joint Operations Centre (JOC) has been established by the city to co-ordinate planning and responses to ensure that the city functions as smoothly as possible. Metropolitan Transport Information Centre will run 24/7 during the strike. Members of the public can call: 0800 6564 63 toll free for information on transport services during the strikes. There will be a daily media briefing at 12h45 everyday to keep the public informed of the latest progress.
