Minister Grant Sends His Condolences to Family of Learner Who Died in Motorbike Accident

24 May 2010

I am deeply saddened by the news that another Western Cape learner passed away today.

Earlier we learnt about the senseless, gang-related death of a learner at Phoenix Secondary in Manenberg. It has now been reported that another Grade 12 learner lost his life today.

This morning, Gavin Engelke, a Grade 12 learner at Bellville High School was killed in a motorcycle accident close to the school. Paramedics were at the scene where they tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Gavin.

I would like to send my condolences to Gavin's family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

The WCED has arranged for counselors and psychologists to be present at the school tomorrow morning to provide trauma counseling for learners and educators.

The school is currently writing June examinations. The school will assess the situation before making a decision on whether to proceed with the Afrikaans examination set for tomorrow.

The WCED will do all they can to assist the school.
