MEC to Present President's Award for Youth Empowerment

26 May 2010

Tonight (Thursday 27 May 2010) Community Safety MEC, Lennit Max, will present eighty (80) young people from eleven (11) community youth groups and residential youth care facilities across the Western Cape with the President's Award for Youth Empowerment.

The MEC will present the recipients with Bronze or Silver certificates and will address the youngsters and guests at the ceremony hosted by Youth Empowerment Action in Franschhoek.

The award is an international youth development programme available to fourteen (14) to twenty five (25) year olds. It acknowledges recipients for making positive decisions and changing their own lives and the lives of others for the better. Recipients will have committed themselves over the last year to their own holistic development in the following areas: service to the community, physical recreation, skills development as well as an adventurous journey.

"The only way to turn around the crime situation in this country is to invest in our youth to become responsible citizens and this is exactly what this programme aims to do. I fully support this initiative and applaud these youngsters for adjusting their attitudes and developing their talents and skills to effect change in the world around them. So many choose a life of crime to become part of the problem and not the solution," says Max.

The President's Award is affiliated to the Duke of Edinburgh's International Association which operates in over one hundred and twenty (120) countries around the world, twenty one (21) of which are in Africa.
