MEC backs Cape Flats Learners in Preparation for the Job Market

11 July 2010

Today I visited the Vrygrond Community Centre, where the Department of Community Safety in conjunction with Etafeni (a community development organisation) is working with unemployed youth from the Vrygrond community and surrounds, to empower and equip them for formal employment.

Part of their six week "Fit for Life, Fit for Work" training programme, includes learner's licence classes, presented by the Department of Community Safety. It is becoming increasingly crucial that young people have driver's licences in order to access gainful employment, and supporting this initiative puts a driver's licence within reach of people who ordinarily would not have access to it.

Through this life skills project, these young people have a wonderful opportunity to break the barriers of poverty and misery and become model citizens. They have each expressed a commitment to reach their goals despite their dire circumstances, and for that I commend them.

As a government we are committed to extending opportunities to all people, which will allow them to better their lives irrespective of their circumstances at birth.
