Traffic Authorities Act Swiftly to Avoid another Bus Accident

1 July 2010

Proactive behaviour on the part of traffic authorities has today led to another SA Roadlink bus driver being arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving. The bus, which was carrying a full load of passengers, was detected on the N1 near Prince Albert, forcing other motorists off the road. It is exactly this type of behaviour that fuels the death toll on our roads, with SA Roadlink having been involved in numerous accidents and breakdowns in the Western Cape in the past year.

The Ministry of Community Safety, through the Safely Home Campaign, is committed to preventing the loss of more lives at the hands of public transport vehicles. This proactive interception has had just that result.

The driver was taken to the Prince Albert police station, and is expected to appear in court soon.

Reckless driving and endangering the lives of other road users will not be tolerated in the Western Cape and offenders will face severe penalties.

I have asked my colleague, Robin Carlisle, Western Cape Transport Minister to add this latest incident to the ongoing probe into SA Roadlink's operation.
