Review of Effects of Today's Industrial Action - 19 August 2010

18 August 2010

Management arrangements by the Western Cape Education Department to monitor attendance of educators during today's industrial strike action indicate that 4.8% (70) of our schools closed as a result of today's industrial strike action.

Sixteen point four percent (16.4%) of educators were absent from work.

At this stage there are no reported incidents of intimidation and/or violence in the province.

We are thankful that the vast majority of our schools in the Western Cape continued to function as per normal. We continue to advise parents and caregivers to send their children to school.

As announced this morning, we are in the process of rolling out a comprehensive strike management plan in order to offset the negative implications for learners in areas worst affected by the strike.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely tomorrow.
