Review of Effects of Today's Industrial Action - 3 September 2010

2 September 2010

Management arrangements by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to monitor attendance of educators during today's industrial strike action indicate that there had been a decrease in school closures and teacher absenteeism since yesterday.

Five (5) percent (77) of our schools closed as a result of today's industrial strike action.

Fourteen percent (14%) of educators were absent from work.

A number of incidents of intimidation at schools had been reported today and the police responded accordingly.

We are thankful that the vast majority of our schools in the Western Cape continued to function. We continue to advise parents and caregivers to send their children to school on Monday.
