Thirty-Seven Drivers Arrested by Provincial Traffic over Weekend for Drunk Driving

Provincial Traffic had twenty four (24) "Safely Home" campaign roadblocks during the past weekend.

At these operations three thousand and nine (3009) vehicles were stopped, one thousand and nine (1009) drivers were screened for possible alcohol use while driving. In total thirty-seven (37) drivers were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, the arrests were forty-five percent (45%) less than the previous weekend. The Chief Director, Mr. Kenny Africa said this is a clear indication that people are acting more responsibly with regards to drinking and driving and that these operations will continue to rid our roads from drunk drivers.
Five hundred and fifty-six (556) fines were issued during these operations for different offences.

During other operations over the weekend a further seven thousand three hundred (7300) vehicles were stopped and checked for roadworthiness, seventy-six (76) drivers were fined for overloading their goods vehicles, two hundred and thirty-five (235) drivers for failing to wear seatbelts.

Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement wants to send out a clear message that lawlessness will not be tolerated on any public road in this Province.
Every driver, passenger and pedestrian using a public road should do so in a responsible manner; obey the rules of the road and the traffic signs. Keep to the speed limit and use the road as if your fellow road users are your loved ones.
