Cape Peninsula University of Technology Students Donate Ten Thousand Rand to Khayelitsha Community Health Centre

19 October 2010

On Wednesday, 20 October 2010, a group of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) donated ten thousand rand (R10 000) to the Khayelitsha Site B Community Health Centre.

The money was collected by the Paramedic students and will be used to upgrade the facility's triage (where patients' files get categorised in different colours according to the severity of their illness) area, which services about five thousand (5 000) patients a month.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha said, "It is heart-warming that these students have chosen to direct their hard-earned funds to the Khayelitsha Site B Community Health Centre. Provincial government is not able to carry the burden of disease alone, and every contribution towards the improvement of health facilities, can lessen that burden."

The second year students from the Emergency Medical Science Department at CPUT are currently on Advanced Life Support Training to become Paramedics.

These students raised money through fundraising for their training and it is customary to donate any excess money where they see a need.

"The people at Khayelitsha Site B need all sorts of support in community development, we have chosen the facility because our initiative is much appreciated there and this is to thank them for letting us become part of the community and allowing us to be of service", says Gino Perez , Emergency Medical Science student at CPUT.
