Acting Mayor Maria Geldenhuys Officially Opened the New Reservoir for Witzenberg Municipality in Wolseley

10 November 2010

Witzenberg municipality has experienced extreme water shortages in the past eight (8) years and the need for a reservoir was identified. This reservoir was funded by the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).

Anton Bredell, Minister for Local Government, emphasised the need for partnerships to ensure effective local government. "It is through sustainable partnerships that my department can continue to improve infrastructure and service delivery to people in all municipalities. The MIG projects have reported 100% expenditure which means that, together with Departments such as Water Affairs, we are ensuring better infrastructure to communities." He said.

Work on the reservoir project included the construction of the six (6) million litre reservoir, upgrading of the main supply pipe, upgrading of the main overflow pipe and the fencing-off of the terrain around the reservoir.

This new reservoir will largely benefit the residents of the Witzenberg municipality by providing relief during drought periods.

About Municipal Infrastructure Grant:
The Municipal Infrastructure Grant is a conditional grant that supports municipalities with their capital budget and their Integrated Development Plans (IDP) to fund infrastructure, primarily benefiting poor households. Communities have to be involved in the IDP process and participated in the prioritising of projects aimed at improving their lives. It also creates jobs with labour intensive methods in line with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and Governments objective of eradicating poverty. The projects include building and upgrading of roads, storm water drainage, pipe lines, waste water works, bulk water provision, meters, pumps, reservoirs, fencing, lights, sport facilities, and infrastructure for cemeteries.
