NDMC gears up for SA Disaster Risk Reduction commemoration

10 October 2022

The National Disaster Management Centre has collaborated with the City of Cape Town to coordinate and host South Africa’s 2022 commemoration of the annual International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is commemorated on 13 October.

The country’s commemoration, taking place on 13 and 14 October 2022, will be a hybrid event - physically at the City of Cape Town’s Council Chamber and online.

The IDDR celebrates how people and communities worldwide are reducing their exposure to disasters as designated by the United Nations. The commemoration provides an opportunity for disaster risk management practitioners and policymakers to reflect on achievements in reducing disaster risk.

As part of the commemorative event, the practitioners will, on day two, hold the sector discussions guided by the theme: “Substantially increase the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030."

South African government also uses the IDDR commemoration to encourage individuals, communities and civil society to become agents of change in building disaster-resilient communities.
